I started using backtracking last year when I piloted a Glencoe book call
Impact. You can go to www.glencoe.com to check. The Impact series has 3 books,
backtracking method is described in book number 2. First chapter explores not
only backtracking but "the bags and blocks" method. Students can always relate
to bags and blocks method. The backtracking has its problems but it is a great
start for students that have struggled with solving equations.
