You could have students draw arbitrary triangles of whatever dimensions they
wish and decide how to collect the appropriate data to compare the results from
Heron's formula and bh/2.  This could be done outside on the basketball court or
in a gym.  

Provide them with a straightedge and compass (both can be served by clothesline
and/or tape measure) and sidewalk chalk, chalk line or tape to mark up the
triangle.
