the Math Connections series. Math Connections is a full 3-year curriculum
developed in response to the 1989 NCTM standards, funded by the NSF. The first
year "set" (two books) is a great resource for teachers, in that it includes
some of the very ideas you discussed: more in-depth justification for
algebraic ideas. In fact, the development of "functions" in Unit 6 is very
elegant; I haven't seen another textbook come even close. Give it a shot!
