I agree that the "glitzy" graphics that the publishers have added detracts from
the text. The result is not "considerate" text.
A strategy to have the students return to the text and monitor their
comprehension is to have the students themselves write  questions and answers
based on the text. Tell them it has to be a "right there question"; other
students must be able to point to the exact answer of their question in the
text.
