I teach continuation school Algebra. Skip the texts. Use software. ALEKS may
be the best in an environment of poor attendance, poor study skills, poor
background ....

Find math that is valuable to the students as an alternative. Short films that
mention math with a worksheet that has an anchor problem.

Of course, you can just use worksheets and prepare for testing: aren't low
scores great and so meaningful to the students.
