Theo Gray, one of the co-founders of Wolfram Research (producers of
Mathematica) has done a great deal with the periodic table.  I don't know
whether his work might be useful for your questions, but I can recommend that
you visit the Mathematica Demonstrations site (from the site, search for
"Periodic Table").  You don't have to have Mathematica installed to see the
applets, and you might pick up some interesting ideas.
