To continue:
Let me give a numerical illustration. Let phi(x) = x^2 + x + 17.
x phi(x) factors of failure functions
phi(x) x=
1 19 19 1 + 19k
2 23 23 2 + 23k
3 29 29 3 + 29k
Note: i) When x generated by the f.functions are substituted in
phi(x) we invariably get failures (composites).
ii) When phi(x) is composite each factor contributes a
failure function.
