Try relating the numbers to something they understand. For example is you have 7
people and 6 dollars and you are to give each person 1 dollar, how many dollars
will you have left? If you have 6 people and 7 dollars and you are to give 1
dollar to each person, how many dollars will you have left? Most students will
be able to tell you that you do not have enough dollars for the first question
and you will have 1 dollar extra for the second example.
