It depends on what you want to do with it. If you are just interested in the
calculations part, most computers have a system calculator that can be switched
into "scientific" mode. If you are looking for the graphing capabilities, the
TI-73 is only $70, a Casio graphing calculator is $55, and an HP 39GS graphing
calculator runs about 40 at walmart.
The TI-83 is similar in function (less memory and a smaller processor, but if
you are on a virtual calculator, that will depend more on your computer than the
name on the front of the calculator). TI offers a virtual TI-83 on their
website http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/84/8442.html
