I like the way the applet allows students to solve the same problem using
subtraction with different magnitudes and addition with the same magnitude. It
really enforces that subtracting a positive magnitude is the same as adding the
negative magnitude.
One glitz: When adding zero pairs into the circle. The second prompt asks you
to eliminate any positives "+" left in the circle. As long as the student
provides the correct answer there can be "+" represented in the answer. The
mental representation within the circle is correct but for some it can be
counterintuitive.
Nice applet for introducing subtraction of integers.
