If you are teaching Algebra 1, the graphing calculators are really important to
use as a checking device when students are learning to graph data, slopes of
lines, changing values of yintercept, etc. because of their speed. The
student should be able to predict the characteristics, but drawing on graph
paper is not the goal. Likewise, it can be used efffectively for quadratic
functions. Even math students at lower grade levels need to be familiar with
how to operate one. Sending them to high school without that knowledge is like
sending an elementary student to middle school without a solid grasp of the
multiplication tables. Many new textbooks have labs that are geared toward using
graphing calculators.
