in most statistics and probability textbooks. Mutually exclusivity is a
characteristic of events within the context of a single experiment.
Independence should not be introduced as a characteristic of events but as a
characteristic of the experiments which produce one of several events. Two
experiments can be considerred independent if the calculations of probabilities
in each experiment can be multiplied to determine the probability of compound
events.
Most textbooks use examples like sex and age which represent two independent
experiments but then proceed to ignore that fact and talk almost wholly about
"independent events". That phrase should be suspect until the concept of
"independent experiments" is clear.
