And here's a link to an introductory paper discussing a possible shift in the
relationships between "the basics" and calculus as found in school-related
curricula.

Not sure if this has any relation to "easy" but it might be worth considering.
Sometimes it seems we can lose track of various traditions in of the history of
inquiry in mathematics education (not that this, or any, paper can do much about
this).  Certainly Jim Kaput's papers are worth digging up (probably more so than
this paper) for those interested using software to "democratize" (his word)
access to calculus.
