I have posted a Geometer's Sketchpad file on Newton's Method at:

The sketch allows you to explore the mechanism by which the method works, along
with the conditions under which it works.  The number of iterations can be
increased, as can the starting point.  The convergence depends on the type of
function as well as your starting point.

This sketch is a simple picture to accompany a more analytic explanation from a
textbook.  The extensive calculations, if done by hand, would certainly blind
anyone to the beauty of this process, but by instantly and painlessly seeing the
iterations, one can perhaps better understand the idea.
