New Look for our Newsletter
Starting with the one hundred twenty-third issue of our monthly newsletter,
our issues will sport this new look. Always free, the Math Tools Newsletter
will continue to focus on the same quality of content: newly added resources
to the catalog and recent discussions from the site.

We welcome your opinion - let us know what you think of our new format.

The Problems of the Week (PoWs) have kicked off for the 2013-2014 academic year!
See when submissions open, solutions post, and free mentoring opportunities
become available by consulting the PoW calendar.

Our Forthcoming Book
Powerful Problem Solving: Activities for Sense-Making with the Mathematical Practices
Our focus on sense-making and communication in our Problem Solving Activity Series
is so important, we wrote a book about it! Authored by Max Ray, this book gathers
what we've learned about helping students become proficient problem solvers, focused
through the lens of the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practices.

Farm Game - Laurel Pollard
Count the animals with the Farm Game.

Math Notepad - Jos de Jong
Math Notepad is an editor for your day-to-day mathematical calculations. It is
designed for engineers, teachers, and students. The application is a web-based
notepad where you can enter editable expressions. The results are displayed right
below an expression. After a change, all dependent calculations are updated
automatically. Math Notepad supports real and complex numbers, units, and matrices.
One can define variables and functions and plot interactive graphs.

Desmos Graphing Calculator for iPad - Desmos
Graph functions, evaluate equations, explore transformations, plot points, and more.

Number Pieces Basic - The Math Learning Center, Clarity Innovations
Number Pieces Basic helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value
while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students can use
the number pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, count, regroup, add, and
subtract. The drawing tools allow students to label representations and show
their understanding.

Integral Calculator - David Scherfgen
The Online Integral Calculator can calculate both definite and indefinite integrals
(antiderivatives). The user's input is transformed into a graphical formula in
real-time, which helps prevent input mistakes such as forgetting parentheses.

online for young elementary students to measure vertically."

Software and Educational Tools
Vet asks, "What software and educational tools both computerized and manual
have you found to be the most helpful and the least expensive?"

Mr. E's ver. 2.0 Math Website
