| Description: |
This is a PowerPoint lesson on exponents designed with the middle schooler in mind. The lesson uses color, sound, and animation to effectively illustrate necessary concepts and procedures. An analogy between repeated additions (e.g., 3 x 5 = 3+3+3+3+3) and repeated multiplications (e.g., 3 ^ 5 = 3*3*3*3*3) is used to motivate and explain the concept of exponent. The times sign (x) is used for repeated additions, and the caret (^) for repeated multiplications. Students first practice using the caret on their calculators and by hand. Then the positional notation for exponent is introduced with further practice. Optional extensions are included for zero to the zero power and negative exponents. |
