| Description: |
Download this Sketchpad file to investigate the definite integral using a model of a car accelerating from rest. Students explore the graph of the car's speed as a function of time, and use Sketchpad's grid to estimate the area under the curve, which represents distance travelled. Use this activity as an introduction to the concept of the definite integral, even before using the term "definite integral." This activity can be used alone, but is more effective when used with the next activity, Trapezoidal Accumulation, and most effective when used with all four other activities in the Sketchpad Activities for Introducing Calculus Topics series, which introduces the main topics of calculus. |

| Comment: | Pretty good exposition of the definite integral as an area under a curve, but doesn't go into net change in quantity (fundamental theorem). I also thought the sketchpad to be user-friendly. |
