The PCTM Puzzle of the Week - Solutions

Name: Chris Hanusa
Grade: 12
School: Taylor Allderdice High School

If 85% of the soldiers were killed, and this is 708
soldiers, we can find out how many soldiers there were to
begin with.

Call the starting amount x.
Then, .85*x=708.
This means that x= 832.9 (approx.) This does not
make sense, because you can not have .9 of a person (I don't
know what you call a wounded soldier), so let's round to x=833.

If 85% died, that means that 15% survived. So, the
total number of survivors is: .15*833= 124.9, which we round to
125.

So, my answer is that 125 soldiers survived.
