The PCTM Puzzle of the Week - Solutions

Name: Bill Garrett
Grade:
School:
At 3 for $.40 for the McIntosh apples 1 would sell fro $.13 1/3
At 2 for $.40 for the Delicious apples 1 would sell for $.20
Therefore the average price per apple is (.13 1/3 + .20)/2
     or $.16 2/3 per apple.
She would be well advised to sell them in multiples of 3 at
3 for $.50 so as to not have to section apples in thirds!

Of course she could run the apples through the cider press and
sell the cider at $3.00 a gallon (assuming she gets 4 gallons
of cider from the 120 apples! This does not however allow any
extra compensation for the work involved in squeezing the apples!

Name: Denise McCleary
Grade: 10, 11
School: Regis

At the stated prices, Stephanie would make $20.00. She should sell the mixed lot of apples for the price
of six apples for one dollar and she will still make the same amount.

However, I would be upset if I had to make this choice since red delicious apples
and McIntosh apples do not taste the same. (Red delicious are good for snacking,
but McIntosh are good for pies.)
