Back to Orlando: Equity and Access in Mathematics

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

New braille tools for blind mathematicians

A number of computer-based tools for blind math/science students and professionals under development at Oregon State University will be described briefly. Dotsplus is a new tactile display method that combines braille and tactile images. An 8 dot braille code is being developed in collaboration with Prof. N. Salinas to accompany the 6 dot unified braille code proposed by the International Committee of English Braille. New on-line braille reading and writing programs have been developed to take advantage of the usability of this new braille code. The new program includes ability to read tactile figures using descriptions available through braille or voice synthesis. Finally, the AsTeR audio display program is being developed and extended in collaboration with its inventor, Dr. T.V. Raman.
