Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Linear Algebra

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Geometry of the Singular Value Decomposition

A MATLAB project which visualizes the geometry of the singular value decomposition (and eigenvalues) is demonstrated and described. The user supplies a 2x2 matrix, and then controls, through the MATLAB GUI tools, the input unit vectors for the transformation associated with the matrix. The output vectors are super imposed, and the image ellipse is swept out as the input vectors are manipulated. Various concepts and properties can be seen through some guided experimentation.
