Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Interactive Texts

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

The free Mathwright library of workbooks on the Internet

We will discuss both the current prototype online Mathwright Library that is now available on the temporary WWW site: http://ike.engr.washington.edu/mathwright/ and the plans for its further development as well as possible uses. The Mathwright Library contains a demonstration version of our software (MathKit and Mathwright) for writing and exploring interactive math workbooks along with some sample workbooks. The reader software (Mathwright Library Player) and the books are freely available to be downloaded and used by instructors and students. The workbooks currently in the Library are mostly very short, with little explanation, and often devoted to a single interaction. They merely give a hint at what is possible. Many of them were written by participants in our workshops who had just been introduced to MathScript, the language of MathKit, and were learning how to build Mathwright workbooks. We expect to develop this collection to be much more coherent and useful in several courses.
