Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Math Education Reform

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Improvement of Students' Performance on Functions and
Mathematical Models when using a Graphing Calculator

The graphing calculator's effect on students' performance in mathematics is debatable. There have been many studies that address this topic.

If the calculator does enhance students' performance, does it affect students' performance on functions or mathematical models? To test this, a study was conducted at a large urban university from spring quarter, 1994 through winter quarter, 1995. A pretest and posttest were given to 209 college algebra students the analysis of the data will be presented in this paper.
