Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Math Education Reform

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

A Collaborative to Promote Excellence and Diversity for Future Teachers

This talk will describe a collaborative effort to provide undergraduates interested in mathematics teaching a unique internship opportunity. This partnership involves K-12 teachers and administrators, community college and university faculty and staff, and community members. It has succeeded in attracting a large number of talented undergraduates from underrepresented groups into the UCSB (and other) teacher credential programs. The collaboration also helps tie together various education reform efforts and lead to a comprehensive year-round program for undergraduates, new and restructured courses at the lower and upper division levels, summer and academic year paid teaching internships, workshops on implementing new K-12 mathematics curriculum that engage both current and future teachers, leadership training for undergraduate peer workshop leaders and tutors, and more.
