Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Linear Algebra

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Using Maple V in teaching linear algebra

Maple V is an extremely powerful computer algebra system which is excellent for use in teaching linear algebra. The author has written a software package for Maple V for use in teaching undergraduate linear algebra. Much of this work was done under the auspices of a CCD grant from the NSF, and as part of a larger group effort to develop software for different platforms for use in teaching linear algebra.

The author will demonstrate various examples from the Maple V package and discuss their use in teaching. In addition, new routines are being developed for the package which allow illustration of some key areas and theorems in first semester linear algebra. These will be demonstrated and discussed.
