Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Linear Algebra

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Examples of group projects

In the course of teaching two quarters of linear algebra I have developed several group projects. Each Wednesday the class was put randomly into groups of three or four and the entire period was devoted to these projects. I will discuss the pedagogic philosophy of giving up one third of the quarter to this activity, but primarily I will discuss the actual projects and how they tie in to the course. Particular project topics include coding theory, the geometry of eigenvectors, Fibonacci numbers, and Markov processes.
