More linear algebra in the high school curriculum:
A help or hindrance?
A panel discussion was held at the International Linear Algebra
meeting in Atlanta titled "Connecting Linear Algebra to the High
School Curriculum." A number of important issues were raised at
that time. This talk will continue this topic and address some of
the following questions: What parts of linear algebra are now
being taught at the high schools? Are there additional topics
which should be taught? What type of technology may we expect the
schools to use? Should we encourage a semester/year course or
just a selected set of topics/modules? What additional training
will the teachers need? Who will provide this training? Will
university math departments accept what is being taught or will
it just be "retaught" later? What can we do to influence this
process?
