Re-Forming Elementary Teachers' Beliefs
Research findings suggest that modification of teachers' beliefs about mathematics is essential to effecting reform in mathematics education. In order to effect such belief modification, the author has developed course materials and activities for use in mathematics courses for pre-service elementary teachers. Special emphasis is placed on the roles played by communication and assessment as they relate to active mathematical learning. Encouraging reflection about both mathematics and mathematics pedagogy is also a key objective of the course. This paper will report on the course design and justification, the observations and modifications made following the first piloting in 1993, and preliminary results observed in subsequent testing.
