This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics
Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Ideas and idea sources
for creating active learning environments
for prospective elementary teachers
For the past three summers, mathematics faculty from across the
country met at the NSF-funded Project PROMPT (Professors
Rethinking Options in Mathematics for Prospective Teachers)
workshops to share ideas, activities, and strategies for improving
the mathematical preparation of prospective elementary teachers.
Consequently, there is a growing wealth of ideas for those in the
mathematics community who are interested in creating active
learning environments for prospective elementary teachers. In this
session, attendees will engage in a sample activity, gain
information on related electronic resources, and find ways to
connect with the growing network of colleagues who are working
to create active learning environments for their students.
