This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.
Combining Content and Methods for Pre-Service Elementary Teachers
This presentation will describe a six semester hour program of study in mathematics content and methods resulting from a collaborative effort by the Departments of Mathematics and Education at a private, liberal arts college for women. The content course was designed to include the use of manipulatives, group and individual investigations in problem solving situations, journal writing, children's literature, alternative assessment techniques, use of technology, and an investigation of cognitive styles and their influences on the understanding of mathematics. The methods course, taken during the same semester, offered traditional methods topics, plus an on-site component where the class participants observe, plan, and teach elementary students.
