Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Pre-Service Teacher Ed

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

NUMBERS - An Interactive Tutorial Program

Arising from interaction with Pre-Service Teachers, the author has developed the above executable program for use in the classroom, remediation laboratory, or by individual students. NUMBERS runs under Windows 3.1 or higher, and, to get the most mileage out of it one needs sound capability in the computer. Pre-Service Teachers must be have a thorough understanding of why the arithmetic operations are the way they are. Many beginning teachers may have moderate arithmetic skills, but tend to be intimidated by the realization that they will have to explain the rules to youngsters. NUMBERS leads the user through the Natural Numbers, Counting Numbers, Integers, Rationals, and Real Numbers (viewed as decimals), with emphasis on how each successive system overcomes deficiencies in the previous one. At various points along the way, users can select options in order to concentrate upon particular topics.
