This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Assessment of the Program of the Mathematical Sciences
at Northern Illinois University

In addition to its periodic survey of baccalaureate graduates the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Northern Illinois University has begun an assessment procedure which involves the evaluation of portfolios of student work accumulated throughout the degree period with respect to the acquisition of five major objectives for the bachelor's graduate. The development of this program and its operation will be discussed.
