Geometer's Sketchpad - Geometry and beyond - Bethel Schools, WA

Description: An introductory workshop for middle and high school math teahcers on the use of GSP as a tool for teaching and learning in math classes from 1st year Algebra through Geometry and beyond all the way to Calculus.

Curriculum writing - Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Description:Farahani and other members of the grade 11 & 12 college and workplace writing team for the Ontario ministry of education, consistedof three community college instructors and three high school teachers was asked to look at the current grade 11 & 12 college and workplace courses. They rewrote the courses to provide a more continuous flow as well as make sure the courses would be appropriate prerequisites for the community colleges.
 
Ontario Provincial Writing Team for TIPS4RM - Haliburton, Ontaraio

Description:Targeted Implementation and Planning Supports for Revised Mathematics (TIPS4RM) offers ways of thinking about mathematics education, connects to current research, and includes grade-level support materials for those working with students in Grades 7 to 10. A team was assembled to write new activities to be used in grade 7 - 10 classrooms in Ontario. I was a member of the grade 10 Applied writing team.
 
Teaching Geometry in Schools - University of Cincinnati, OH

Description: This graduate level class is for pre-service and practicing middle school teachers. Participants learn to use different tools (geoboards, tangrams, GSP) in ways that support the Ohio Content Standards in Mathematics.
 
NWMI Summer Geomtry Institute and Mini Courses - University of Washington

Description:The Ontario Ministry of Education invited all boards of education, faculties of education, colleges, teacher federations and the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education to send a representative to hear about the proposed changes to the grade 11 & 12 mathematics curriculum. Farahani represented the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education. The group was then given one month to give the Ministry of Education feedback on the proposed changes.

Description: All school districts in Ontario and Ontario universities with Faculties of Education sent a team of 5 people to the PRISM conference sponsered by the ministry of education. I was a memeber of the Limestone District school board team which consisted of 3 teachers from elementary school and 2 eachers from high school. Current mathematics research being done in Alberta and Ontario was presented.

Description: The Ontario Ministry of Education asked all of the representatives from the boards of education, faculties of education, colleges, teacher federations and the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education that had been sent the previous month to hear about the proposed changes to the grade 11 & 12 mathematics curriculum to return to Toronto to hear the feedback that was submitted. The major issues were the lack of differential calculus in the proposed changes and the loss of the personal finance course from the grade 11 offerrings.

Notorious and Named Primes - Seattle, WA

Description:Applications and Activities to use for a variety of grade levels involving prime numbers. This presentation was the result of a "roast" that Art Mabbott, Joe and Joyce Frost put on for Royal Penewell to honor him for his many years of service as Treasurer for the Puget Sound Council of Teachers of Mathematics. We created a new prime number definition and logo in his honor.
 
Counting Catalans - Triangulating Polygons - Palm Springs (CMC South), Asilomar (CMC North)

Description:Presented a version of the curriculum written at PCMI. Enumerated and counted a variety of sets (triangulated polygons, chords of circle, nested parentheses, votes, rooted binary trees). Found some bijections between sets. Used lattice points to find and then prove a formula for the Catalan numbers. Also used this unit in an Analysis Honors classes (three sections last year) and, with a colleague, four sections this year. Presented to PCMI local group in November.

Description: Age Structured Population Models: We will examine linear models that allow us to gain insight into how populations with distinct age groups, or developmental stages, can behave. These models utilize elementary matrix algebra at a level appropriate for a Precalculus course. The models will include those of Leslie and Usher.
 
Using Geometer's Sketchpad in the Classroom - Lake Washington S.D. Resource Center

Description: I presented my top 10 reasons why "I love Sketchpad" to showcase its many uses. We then went through activities geared towards Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
 
Using Powerful Problems in the Classroom

Description: Our Winter Northwest Mathematics Interaction Workshop was centered around creating and using powerful problems in the classroom. Art presented the problem of creating the largest possible cylinder from an 8 1/2 by 11 paper with constant area. Joyce shared a few geometry problems from the Mathematics Teacher Article showcasing problems from Phillips Exeter Academy. Karen Hall showed us to how to create and modify problems to make them especially powerful.

Description: About 100 high school students and teachers from the greater Los Angeles area came to HMC to participate in a day of mathematical discovery, open-ended exploration and inquiry in graph theory and in particular, graph complexity. At the end of this free event, students learned about graphs and developed their measure of graph complexity.

Description:Constructed response problems give unique insight into students' mathematical understanding. A rubric that addresses problem solving and communication also provides structure for assessing student work and driving instruction. Algebra I in Middle School? Not All Students Are Ready For It! - NCTM Annual Meeting in St. Louis

Description:What happens to students who take Algebra 1 before they are ready for it? Do they pursue, and are they successful in, more advanced mathematics courses? Current research on this topic will be summarized. Video clips of inteviews with students and teachers will be shown, and alternatives will be presented. Most of the video was shot at PCMI in July thanks to many participants who volunteered to be interviewed.
