Math Specialists/Supervisors Summary

Sunday, June 29, 2003

The Math Specialists kicked off PCMI for 2003 by being the first group to meet. After introductions and a brief overview of PCMI via a 1997 video, the specialist group was confronted with a crisis. Adjustments to the NSF-PCMI grant were to be made immediately. This situation caused our agenda to change.

Our discussion centered around the following items: Development of teacher leaders; How to develop and put into place teacher leader teams; The identification of specific professional development activities for a three year period; Interaction with a university partner. District commitment and charactersitics of teacher leaders. The discussion provided ideas for the representatives from the districts associated with the grant to use in the writing required for the grant.

Dr. James Hiebert, the lead author of the TIMSS 1999 video study report, joined us and prepared us for what we would hear tomorrow in the Cross Program session. The specialists were treated to dinner at the Grub Steak House.
