Reasoning from Data and Chance Summary
Monday - Friday, July 6 - 10, 2009
During the second week participants continued working on their group projects. Timon and Huong are developing lessons using the year 2000 census data. Using Fathom they will have students take samples of individuals from New York and New Jersey and then use graphical displays to look at anomalies and outliers in the distribution. Later students will take larger samples and discuss differences in samples, compare the sample distribution to the population distribution.
Matt and Kent are developing a two-day probability activity. On the first day students will physically collect data by flipping a coin and spinning an unfair spinner. Later the teacher will run a computer simulation to make comparisons between what is fair and unfair by comparing the center and spread of the corresponding histograms.
Aaron continued to analyze a large set of body measurements and is developing an activity in which students will compare various ratios and then use regression and correlation on Fathom to further analyze these ratios. Todd is looking at how to use the same data set to have students draw a person according to a predetermined ratio. Joe is developing activities to encourage students and teachers to use Fathom on his campus. Oscar is investigating how to use simulation to develop ANOVA.
