Summary:

July 9 Ignite! Increasing Our Confidence (Intervals)! - Ellie Terry

Summary:
Ellie shared the Ignite talk that she gave at the 2013 NSCM in Denver that showed an Exit Poll project that her AP Statistics students did this past fall. She is looking for NYC based teachers to decrease their margins of error by increasing their sample size for Exit Polls in the Mayoral Election this coming fall.

July 10 LOG WARS - Blue Taylor

Summary:
LOG WARS is a game based on the kid game "War" with regular playing cards. Each card has a log expression. The game starts with each player taking half of the deck. Each of the two players has their pile face down and they each pull a card and put it face up. The player with the log expression with the highest value takes both cards. If the two cards are of equal value then they declare war and each player puts down one face down card and then another card face up. The player with the log expression of highest value takes all six cards unless they tie again. Then they repeat the process. The player who gets all the cards wins the game. This game can also be modified for fractions and equivalent fractions or for decimals or whatever you can think of. Matthew got this off of a math blog called, f(t), but there are a few variations, some with extra worksheets and activities.

July 11 Developing Mathematical Habits of Mind - Mimi Cukier

Summary:
Mimi pointed people to the lessons that her school designed devoted to developing mathematical habits of mind: tinker, take things apart, simplify the problem, visualize, etc. Each habit has one lesson devoted to it. The lessons consist of puzzle problems that become much easier if you use the habit. Over time, kids can prompt themselves to use the habits themselves. She showed some sample problems from this website for accessing more of the lessons. Mathematical Practice #1 in the Common Core Standards is: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Using the habits of mind provides students with "ways in" to problems so that they won't just give up when they're stuck.

July 16 Math Encounters - Gabriel Rosenberg

Summary:
Math Encounters, http://momath.org/math-encounters/, is a monthly series of talks presented by the Simons Foundation and the Museum of Mathematics. These are talks from people who know how to bring the spectacular beauty and amazing applications of mathematics to an audience of all ages and mathematical background. And the best news is that even if you can't make it to New York, almost all of the talks are being made available on the museum's YouTube channel. I've put together a spreadsheet, http://tinyurl.com/mathencounters, with links to all of the talk descriptions and to the YouTube clips when available.

July 17 Gapminder and StatKey - Donna Young

Summary:
Mr. Hans Rosling and five members of the Lock family have created websites that could be useful to the teaching community as we teach the statistics topics contained in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. In addition to doing Ted Talks, Mr. Rosling launched Gapminder that makes available a large collection of data about countries and states. These data are presented in a unique graphical format so that comparisons between entities can be made and trends can be observed. The Lock family has made available StatKey, a site that allows for analyzing data and for making inferences using bootstrap methods.
