Learning from Student Work: Make the Most of Your PoW Membership

The long-term outcome for students working with the Problems of the Week is a combination of good problem solving and strong mathematical communication. Figuring out how to encourage students to reflect and revise is as much a process for a teacher as it is for their students.

In this course you will have the opportunity to mentor student work submitted to the Math Forum from classrooms around the world. The goal is for you to become comfortable as well as successful in prompting students to develop sound mathematical practices through written feedback. After honing this skill with a diverse range of students, you might want to enroll in "Mentor Your Own: Supporting Strong Development of Mathematical Practices" to learn how to integrate written feedback into your own classroom practice.

  This moderated course will be led by Suzanne Alejandre, and Max Ray-Riek. It will take place online using Canvas, and the Problems of the Week. The only technical requirements are a web browser and Internet access.

Who: Current subscribers of the Problems of the Week who want to become familiar with the Math Forum's mentoring process. Participation requires membership at the Full PoW level or higher. Non-members or Current Problems members may purchase the necessary access at a discounted rate.


January 9 - February 17, 2017
Registration closes at 5 pm EDT on Monday, January 9, 2017. There will be approximately 20 hours of seat-work involved in this course.
