Finding Geometry in the Everyday Environment - Sept. 12-16, 1994
Braulio and Bonita were walking home from the first day of school and had just turned
down their street when Bonita said, "Wow, I'm seeing geometry everywhere now!"
- -Braulio said, "Really? Like what?"
- -"It wouldn't be fun if I told you," said Bonita. "I bet there's so much geometry
around here that if we each made a list, they'd be completely different."
- -"Okay," said Braulio. "Let's find out."
So they wrote down the rules of the game, promising to meet before school in the
morning and compare lists. The rules were:
- Make a list of things you can find in your everyday environment that have
different "geometric" properties ("geometric" can mean a lot of things to different people
- we want to know what _you_ think). Give special attention to objects that are natural,
that is, occur in nature.
- Next to the object's name in your list write the properties that you think are
illustrated by it.
- Which object on your list do you think is "the most geometric?" What makes it
so?
We're hoping that some of you will come up with some unique objects and properties
that others might not think of in making their lists.
