While we get ready for another series of Problems of the Week (PoWs) starting at the end of August, we'll scale back our responses. But every two weeks from now until then, the Math Forum will continue to post challenging word problems and accept solutions to them.

Max Ray Appointed to Serve On NCTM Committee (29 April 2013)
NCTM President Linda Gojak informed the Math Forum that Max Ray has accepted her invitation to serve on the Emerging Issues Committee. To quote NCTM's website: "The Emerging Issues Committee explores and examines issues that emerge either from outside the Council or its leadership that impact the teaching and learning of mathematics. The committee identifies new or emerging issues that deserve greater attention." Max's service will be 2013 through 2016.
The activity by Sousada Chidthachack, Corey Fink, Eric Flam, Greg Guayante, Dave Herron, Teri Hulbert, Alexandra Lee, Vicki Lyons, and Leah Parnes was developed and then taught as an introduction to conditional, converse, and bi-conditional statements. The authors pre-taught the first half of the lesson to a group of summer math camp students (8th - 12th grade) and then taught the full lesson to a class of students at a junior high in Park City.
