Photos from the Institute held Tuesday, June 25 through Friday, June 28 show some of the activities the Fellows engaged in during their time in Philadelphia.
As a featured speaker at CAMT, Max Ray will present "When 2 Is Greater than 4: Listening TO Student Thinking." Both Max and Suzanne Alejandre will be in the Exhibit Hall at Booth 1035.
While we get ready for another series of Problems of the Week (PoWs) starting at the end of August, we'll scale back our responses. But every two weeks from now until then, the Math Forum will continue to post challenging word problems and accept solutions to them.
"At the heart of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative is the valued learner, a learner with an active voice in his/her own learning." So writes Suzanne Alejandre, the Forum's Director of Professional Development, in one of her latest publications - this one, appearing in the spring, 2013 newsletter of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM).
Thanks to everyone who visited our table at the annual conference of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and our booth at the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Annie Fetter presented "Ever Wonder What They'd Notice (If Only Someone Would Ask)?" at the May 10th Dinner Meeting at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago.
Annie Fetter gives a talk called "Hidden Decision-Making in the Math Classroom (Everybody's doing it. Why shouldn't you?)" at the McGraw-Hill Education (Key Curriculum) Ignite event at the 2013 NCSM conference in Denver.
Ever wondered what the Math Forum is all about? What makes us passionate? What IGNITES us? Now you can find out! See how well we do with 20 PowerPoint slides advancing every 15 seconds, whether we're ready or not.
Our focus on sense-making and communication in our Problem Solving Activity Series is so important, we wrote a book about it! Powerful Problem Solving: Activities for Sense-Making with the Mathematical Practices, authored by Max Ray, gathers what we've learned about helping students become proficient problem solvers, focused through the lens of the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practices. April
Max Ray Appointed to Serve On NCTM Committee (29 April 2013)
NCTM President Linda Gojak informed the Math Forum that Max Ray has accepted her invitation to serve on the Emerging Issues Committee. To quote NCTM's website: "The Emerging Issues Committee explores and examines issues that emerge either from outside the Council or its leadership that impact the teaching and learning of mathematics. The committee identifies new or emerging issues that deserve greater attention." Max's service will be 2013 through 2016.
The activity by Sousada Chidthachack, Corey Fink, Eric Flam, Greg Guayante, Dave Herron, Teri Hulbert, Alexandra Lee, Vicki Lyons, and Leah Parnes was developed and then taught as an introduction to conditional, converse, and bi-conditional statements. The authors pre-taught the first half of the lesson to a group of summer math camp students (8th - 12th grade) and then taught the full lesson to a class of students at a junior high in Park City. Ever wondered what the Math Forum is all about? What makes us passionate? What IGNITES us? Now you can find out: one of us spoke at Key Curriculum's Ignite event at CMC-North in Asilomar, CA:
Each speaker had 5 minutes to "talk about whatever lights them up," using 20 slides that auto-advanced every 15 seconds ... whether they were ready or not.
Twitter Math Camp 2013 (#TMC13) will be held Thursday, July 25, 2013 (9 am start) - Sunday, July 28, 2013 (11 am finish) at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.
