

- Geoboards in the Classroom (19 August 1997)
- A unit for teachers from Tom Scavo that offers suggestions for using geoboards to explore the length and area of two-dimensional geometric figures. The Introduction includes pages that describe materials needed, offer discussion and activities for investigating length and area (in particular Pick's Theorem), and provide sample pages of dot paper to print out. Five lesson plans focus on lines, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and right triangles, and a short bibliography rounds out the unit.

- Philip J. Davis has been chosen as latest recipient of this award, sponsored by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics. News release.
- Geometry Turned On (1 August 1997)
- Geometry Turned On: Dynamic Software in Learning, Teaching, and Research, edited by Jim King and Doris Schattschneider, is a new book being published by the MAA. This site contains the files that accompany the papers in the book, as well as a description of the book and ordering information.

- There were over 100 new entries or updates made to the database during the month of July.
- Latest Additions to the Dr. Math Archives (1 August 1997)
- 160 new Question-&-Answer entries were added to the tables of contents in the Dr. Math archives during July 1997.
- Symmetry and Pattern: The Art of Oriental Carpets (1 August 1997)
- In this online exhibit, the study of symmetry is used to analyze patterns in Oriental carpets. A joint project of The Textile Museum and The Math Forum.
