September additions to the Dr. Math Archives (28 September 2001)
160 new question-&-answer entries were added to the tables of contents during September of 2001. There are currently 6,891 answers in the Dr. Math archives.

ESCOT (Educational Resource Components of Tomorrow) (27 September 2001)
The ESCOT project Web pages have been updated to reflect the work done during the three year, NSF-funded project. The updates include a NCTM Standards-Aligned Index, a Teacher Support Index, a Student Version Index, and an Applets Index.

New T2T FAQ: Math in the Real World (19 September 2001)
Mathematics and the Census: Classroom resources for studying and explaining the mathematics involved in the census process.

Math Line Puzzles (14 September 2001)
Sean Peters, a member of the Math Forum community, has contributed additional solutions to the Rosebush 2 puzzle. Try the puzzle and then view the solutions.

The Math Forum has been acquired by Drexel University and is now known as The Math Forum @ Drexel. Our new address is http://mathforum.org/. Bridging Research and Practice (BRAP) (4 September 2001)
The BRAP project Web pages have been updated to reflect the work done during the three year, NSF-funded project. The updates include a page describing the project, a link to the videopaper Encouraging Mathematical Thinking, a review of the videopaper, and models of use.

Celebrate mathematics through the months by remembering the birthday of your favorite mathematician.

Additions to the Forum's Internet Mathematics Library (31 August 2001)
More than 180 sites were added to or updated in the Math Library in August of 2001, for a total archive of 8,490 entries.

Regular Tessellations (20 August 2001)
Suzanne Alejandre at the Math Forum has developed a middle school lesson using BoxerMath.com's Tessellation Tool Java applet to help students understand why equilateral triangles, squares, and regular hexagons tessellate regularly in the Euclidean plane. In addition to alignment to NCTM Standards and a step-by-step guide, the Teacher Lesson Plan links to Math Forum resources such as: Information and Lessons, Problems of the Week, Teacher2Teacher, and Ask Dr. Math. A Student Page is also available.

ESCOT Conference (17 August 2001)
August 15-17, 2001: teachers and developers met in Swarthmore, PA for their third annual summer workshop, hosted by the Math Forum. The Educational Software Components of Tomorrow project has explored a promising direction for innovation: assembling math education software from components rather than hand-crafting new programs or applications for each curricular need. The agenda included reflections at the end of the grant cycle and recommendations for future work that will stem from ESCOT.

August Workshop (8 August 2001)
Springfield School District, Delaware County, PA, August 1, 2001: Shelly Berman followed an agenda that presented an overview tour and facilitated the search for resources for the K-4 teachers in the district. The workshop was held at Sabold Elementary School in Springfield, PA.

New Dr. Math FAQ - A Mathematical Essay (7 July 2001)
Nonstandard Analysis and the Hyperreals, by Jordi Gutierrez Hermoso. An introduction to the most basic ideas of nonstandard analysis and the hyperreal number system, written in answer to a number of questions sent to Ask Dr. Math.

July Conferences and Workshops

Park City Mathematics Institute July 9-27, 2001: Annie Fetter and Suzanne Alejandre worked with the Internet Group in the High School Teacher Program. Shelly Berman helped facilitate the Making Mathematics Meaningful working group in the High School Teacher Program. The institute was held in Park City, Utah.

Philadelphia USP Summer Session Workshops, July 16-19, 2001: For these sessions held at Edison High School, Philadelphia, Sheldon Berman and Suzanne Alejandre presented guided tours of the Math Forum site and problem solving activities for teachers including: Grades PreK-K, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5, and Grades 5-8.
