****************************************************** Because of the holiday, this week's problem will not be due until January 5, 1996. Elementary Problem of the Week, December 18 - January 5, 1996 This week's problem was submitted by Jason Imbrogno, a 5th grader at Burchfield Elementary School, Shaler Area School District, Allison Park, PA. This is a three digit number. The hundreds digit in this number times the tens digit gives you an answer. This answer's ones digit is the one's digit numeral in this three digit number. The tens digit in this number times the ones digit gives you an answer. This answer's ones digit is the same as the hundred's numeral in this three digit number. This three digit number's ones digit plus the hundreds digit gives you an answer. This answer is one more, when you're counting, than the tens digit. When the three digits in this three digit number are all added, the answer is odd. The ones and hundreds digits in this three digit number are even. The tens digit in this three digit number is odd. The tens digit minus the ones digit, times the hundreds digit gives you an answer. This answer is a one digit number. What is the three digit number? ***************************************************** This week's Bonus Puzzler is called, "The Man with the Wood." It was submitted by Joanne Lee, Mount St. Joseph Academy, Flourtown, PA. A man had some wood. On Monday it was in the shape of a cube. On Tuesday, he changed it into the shape of a cylinder, and on Wednesday, he changed it into the shape of a pyramid. He did not cut or carve the wood into these shapes. How did he do it? ******************************************************

The number is 298.
2 x 9 = 18
9 x 8 = 72
8 + 2 = 10
2 + 9 + 8 = 19
9 - 8 = 1
1 x 2 = 2

all 3 of us got 298 for an answer. We looked at clue # 4 and
figured out 14 numbers that would work. Then we looked at clue 3 and
tried each possibility and eliminated some. Then we checked those left
with clue 8 and got the answer.

My answer for the Elem POW 12/18-1/5 is 298.
First I wrote down what each digit in the answer could be. 496, 892, 298, and
396. Then I wrote down all the numbers that it could be from the first three
clues. Then I saw which ones matched, then tested those numbers for the
final clues until every number was eliminated except for 1.
