We worked individually and were all able to solve the puzzler this week.
There are six possible answers that we could find: 11+11+1+1=24
1+11+11+1=24
1+1+11+11=24
11+1+11+1=24
11+1+1+11=24
1+11+1+11=24
Since our time was limited this week, we worked individually and five of us
were able to make the deadline. Here are the solutions and explanations
from Lynne, Ben, Jeff, Jessica, and Sam:
>From Sam: Well, I pictured it in my mind and I thought about
it and I figured that Matt likes red, Patty likes blue, Jenna likes purple,
and Tom likes brown.
FFrom Jessica: I think Matt likes red because it's one of the
boy's favorite colors and it's not the same number of letters. You said
"Jenna and the other girl who likes blue" and the only other girl is Patty,
so Patty likes blue. Jenna must have to like purple because clue #1 says
that no name has the same number of letters, so I figured that Jenna likes
purpla and Tom likes brown.
>From Jeff: First, I wrote down the four names. I wrote blue
under Jenna. Then I thought I would trial and error. I think Matt likes
red,Tom likes brown, and Jenna likes 2 - she likes purple too.
>From Lynne: First I took the names of the kids and wrote them
down, put the colors that they couldn't have then read the problem again.
Then I figured that there was a clue that said the girl other than Jenna
liked blue. Patty liked blue. One of the boys liked red so it had to be
Matt. Tom liked brown because Jenna couldn't like brown and Jenna liked
purple.
PattyMattTomJenna
blueredbrownpurple
>From Ben:
Matt= red because it says that red is a favorite color of a boy and the
person doesn't have the same number of letters in their name as their
color.
Patty=blue because it says Jenna and the girl who likes blue and that means
that it jas to be Patty who likes blue because there are only two girls and
it doesn't say that jenna likes blue.
Jenna=purple because it says they don't have the same number of letters in
their name as their color and if Jenna liked brown it would have the same
number of letters as in her name. Tom=brown because it is the only color
left.

We solved the problem by drawing a logic chart. We drew the chart below.
Patty's favorite color is blue. Jenna's favorite color is purple. Matt's
favorite color is red and Tom's favorite color is brown.
PattyJennaMattTom
______________________________________________________
brownxxxo
blueoxxx
redxxox
purple xoxx
The x means it doesn't have anything to do with the person, and the o means
it relates to the person.
BONUS: We wrote the six 1's on the board and set it equal to 24. Then on
our first try we found out that 11 + 11 + 1 + 1 = 24

Jacob Smith - Miss McCarthy's 4th grade class - Center Schoo, Stow, MAl 1.
The answer is:
Brown ...........Tom
Blue ...............Patty
Purple........... Jenna
Red .................Matt
I got this answer by starting with #1. Therefore Tom couldn't have Red,
Matt couldn't have blue, Patty couldn't have purple. Then I went to #2 and
found that Patty must have blue and no one else can have it then. Then from
#3 I figured that Matt likes Red because Tom can't have it. Therefore,
Jenna has to like purple and Tom has to like brown.

1. On the first clue I eliminated Tom liking red Jenna and Patty couldn't
like brown and Matt liking blue. The other girl who likes blue is Patty and
Jenna is the other girl so Patty is out. Jenna likes purple because she
can't like brown and she can't like red because she's not a boy and you
have all ready used blue. Matt likes red because Tom couldn't like red and
Tom likes brown.
2. I did 11 + 1 +11+1 =24

Elise Tarbi - Grade 4 Miss McCarthy Center School , Stow, MA
1. Matt's favorite color is red. Tom's favorite color is brown.Patty's
favorite color is blue. Jenna's favorite color is purple. The way I figured
the problem out was it said red is the favorite color of one of the boys
and the letters of the name couldn't have the same number as the color. So I
figured that Matt's was Red.Then I saw that Patty, and Jenna's names have 5
letters in them so there favorite color couldn't be brown so Tom's had to
be brown. One of the clues was Jenna and the girl who likes blue are in
different grades. So I thought the other girl was Patty so Patty likes
Blue. The only color left was purple and the only girl left was Jenna so
Jenna likes Purple.
2. 11+11+1+1=24

>From Mrs. Trudell's 3rd grade class - Center School Stow, MA
Cameron Kerr -
1.Tom couldn't like red, Matt couldn't like blue, Jenna couldn't
like brown and Patty couldn't like brown.
There is only one other girl besides Jenna so Patty has to like Blue.
Matt has to like red because Tom can't. Tom has to like brown because Jenna
can't (same number of letters). Jenna has to like purple.
2.No answer given
Ben Quirk
1.The way I got blue was that #2 said that Jenna and the girl who
liked blue...So Patty was the only other girl and she had to like blue. #3
says that red is the color for one of the boys and since Tom can't like red
because it has 3 letters, Matt has to like red. That leave Brown and
Purple. Since Jenna can't have brown because it has 5 letters, then it has
to be Tom. That leaves Jenna having purple.
2.11+11+1+1=24
Sarah Batsford
1.Patty is blue. Jenna is purple. Tom is Brown. Matt is Red.
It says that Jenna and the girl who likes blue..and the only other girl is
Patty so she likes blue. It says red is the favorite color of one of the
boys and also that the color doesn't have the same number of letters as the
name so Tom can't like red, so Matt has to like red. Jenna is purple
because brown has the same number of letters as her name. That leave Tom
being brown!
2.I put six ones down and mixed them up. I got two ones next to
each other and made 11. And then I put two more 1s next to each other which
made another 11. Then I had two 1s left over so I add these two ones to the
two 11s and got 24. 11 + 11 + 1 + 1 = 24

Jason Crotty in Mrs. O'Connell's 5th grade class at Center School
1.Matt = red
Jenna = purple
Patty = blue
Tom = Brown
First it says that no one has the same amount of letters as the color so
Tom can't be red, Matt can't be blue, Patty and Jenna can't be brown.
Second it say thatJenna and the girl who like blue are in different grades
so the only girl beside Jenna is Patty so Patty likes blue. Finally, Red is
the favorite color of one of the boys. It has to be Matt because Tom can't
like red. Then Imatched up Jenna with purple because she can't like brown
because it has 5 letters. This makes Tom have to like Brown.
2.1+1+11+11=24
This answer comes from Chris Wade and Ted Powers in Mrs. Pensa's 3rd grade
class at Center School.
1.Jenna = Purple andTom = Brown and Matt = Red and Patty = blue
We got Matt as red because Tom has three letters in his name and red does
so Matt had to be Red.
Patty had to be blue because "Jenna and the girl who likes blue..." meant
that only Patty was left to be the girl who liked blue. Tom is brown
because Jenna can't have brown because her name has five letters in it.
Then we knew Jenna was purple.
2.11+11+1+1=24.

Our group used a matrix to get the following answers: Patty's favorite
color is blue. Matt's favorite color is red. Tom's favorite color is brown.
Jenna's favorite color is purple.
The answer for the bonus quiestion is: 11+ 11+1+1=24. We got that answer
because since you have to use 6 ones the numbers that we use had to be
either 11 or 1. Then we just tried and checked until we came up with that
answer.
Heights Elementary SchoolNovember 22, 1995
Mr. Philips 6th gradeMath Frogs
Patty likes the color blue, Matt likes the color red, Tom likes the color
brown and Jenna likes the color purple. We figured it out by doing a
matrix, we knew matt has red because it says a boy likes red and nobody
likes a color that has the same amount of letters in their name. So you
cross out all of the other colors for Matt and cross everyone else out for
red. You know Patty and Jenna didn't have brown because they have same
letters as the color. We know Matt doesn't have brown which means Tom has
to have brown. We heard in the clue that Jenna didn't have blue, so that
means that she has purple. That leaves Patty with blue.
*Bonus*
We did guess and check and moved all the ones and pluses around and finally
got 11+11+1+1=24.
Math MachinesNovember 22,1995
Heights ElementaryGrade 6 Room 202
Patty and Jenna can not like brown because all three names have five
letters. They also can not like red because one of the boys has to like
red. Tom can not like red because there are the same number of letters in
each word. Matt has to like red. Tom likes brown. Jenna likes purple. Patty
has to like blue.
We put down all the ones then we put the plus signs in everywhere until it
worked. We came out with 11 + 1 + 11 + 1 = 24.
Sharks Nov. 22, 1995
Heights Grade 6 Room 202
Patty likes blue, Jenna likes purple, Matt likes red and Tom likes brown.
It can only be that because no person's name can be the same amount of
letters as the color. *Bonus:11+11+1+1=24 Because no other one fits.

Matt: Red
Patty: Blue
Jenna: Purple
Tom: Brown
First I figured out that Tom couldn't have red, Matt couldn't
have blue, and Patty and Jenna couldn't have brown. Red is
the favorite color of the boys. Since Tom couldn't have red,
Matt had to. Patty had blue because clue #2 said "Jenna and
the girl who likes blue." Then I had brown and purple left. So
Jenna had to have purple and Tom had brown.

Moriah Wyble's solution, Grade 3, Lincoln Elementary, Burlingame, CA
In number one it says that no person`s name has the same number of letters
in his or her name so Tom`s favorite color could not be red.But then Matt`s
favorite color could not be blue.
In number two it says that jenna and the girl that like`s blue.In the
probolm says that the other girl`s name is patty and patty`s favorite color
is blue.
If matt`s favorite color can`t be red or blue, then it has to be brown. If
Jenna's favorite color can't be blue, red, or brown, it has to be purple.
**************************
Shane Arslan 3rd grader
in Mrs. Kaye's class at Lincoln Elementary School in Burlingame.
The clue said that the kids name and the name of the color can't have the
same number of letters. So Tom's coloris not red, so red has to be Matt's
color because the clue said that red is one of the boys favorite color.
Jenna cant like blue because the other girl likes blue. So Patty likes
blue. Jenna cant like brown because brown has five letters and so does
Jenna so Jenna lkes purple. Now all we have is Tom and brown so Tom likes
brown.
BONUS I put 11+11+1+1=24 that uses 6 1's and 3 +'s and the answer equals 24.
