Art activities are especially chosen to facilitate motor skills of children according to their age and developmental capabilities. Demonstrated are an assortment of hands on art activities that help students visualize basic geometric attributes & vocabulary: i.e., Point, Line, Polygon, Plane, Congruence, Proportion, & Scale, etc. Special copier master materials containing useful grids provide gateways visualizing patterns and many geometric concepts having to do with mensuration: Unit of Measure, Cardinal Numbers, Fractions, Zero, Area, Perimeter, etc.
Dial-A-Design (Grades 3-5) & Looking For Patterns (Grades 3-5) & (Grades 6-9)
Two workshops utilizing unique GTA copier grids provide open ended ways to discover patterns in art, geometry and nature. Learners play with transformations and heuristically discover how simple 'units of repeat' slide, flip, and turn to create colorful and spectacular patterns. Emphasis is placed on 'visualizing,' developing 'spatial sense,' & building new math and geometry vocabulary.
Why The Clock Has Twelve Numbers (Grades 4-6 & 7-9) & Why Pi Is More Than 3 (7-9)
The safest compasses and the easiest to work with are circular plastic covers you can get at any supermarket. These used as com circle making compass and straight edges made of cardboard explore the geometry of the circle the way the ancient Greeks might have done if they had these tools. Making geometric constructions and color mapping them help learners visualize not only why the clock has 12 numbers and there are 360 degrees in a circle, but discover the meaning of pi, and why it is more than 3! Available too are extraordinary grids designed to enable students to create unique, colorful kaleidoscopic designs.
Secrets of The Square (Grades 4-7)
Teachers often learn right along with their students as they explore the unique properties inside the square. Special grids help in discovering geometric (square and rectangular) numbers,'prime' and the 'irrational' numbers as they re-imagine the Pythagorean Theorem! Teachers will make and use knotted rope the way the Egyptians did in the building their pyramids. The geometric square is a most excellent gateway to the study of different kinds of number and their patterns-using assorted hands-on art activities.
The Anatomy of The Circle or The Circle is the Momma! (Grades 3-7)
Norman Shapiro's 'Circle Box' is easy to make. It is one of several dramatic teaching manipulatives he's devised for visualizing. It allows children to imagine its circumference as being 'the envelope' containing an infinity of sequential regular polygons. From the triangle, the 3gon, (3 points touching the circumference) to 4gon, 5gon, 6gon, 7gon, 8gon, 9gon, to 100gon and more, the more points touching the circle the more like a circle the polygon becomes: "The Circle is the Momma!" This is a workshop about ways to create useful teaching manipulatives and hands-on activities that will motivate learners to visualize and explore the implications of abstract concepts in math and geometry.
