# Spreadsheet Basics

Data is stored and displayed in cells. A **cell** is addressed by **column** letter and **row** number. Your current cell address is displayed in the **address box**. You move around in the spreadsheet by clicking a cell with the mouse or using the tab or arrow keys.

To enter data you will **select** a cell by clicking on it and then typing your data. What you are typing will show up in the **entry bar**. Press **Return** or **Enter**.

Hint: The **X** and **check mark** between the Address box and Entry bar can be used to cancel or accept an entry you've just typed.

Open this spreadsheet. If you haven't done so already set your Web browser to use ClarisWorks as a helper application for these examples.

There are three types of data in the spreadsheet shown above:

**titles** (or text) in column A and in row 1,
**numbers** in cells B3 through C6, and
**formulas** in cells D3 through D10.

In the spreadsheet shown above, cell D3 has been selected. The formula in cell D3 can be seen in the **entry bar**. Formulas begin with an equal sign. Formulas use cell addresses like variables are used in algebraic expressions. The formulas in cells D4, D5, and D6 are similar to the formula in cell D3. The formula, =SUM(D3..D6) in cell D8, adds up the values in cells D3 through D6.

### Problem

Using the ledger example spreadsheet, find out how many pencils you can afford to buy if you have only $10 and buy only one package of graph paper.
