Math Mentors for the week of 11/18-11/22 are the math education graduate students in Dr. Eileen Schoaff's class at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY. The title of the course is "Teaching of Geometric Concepts in the Secondary School." Of the 24 students in the class, 16 are full time teachers in grades 2 - 12, two are part-time teachers, three are full-time students who occasionally substitute in area schools, one is a full-time substitute teacher, and two are part-time students and full-time moms. (Several have children.)All of the students have linked up to the Math Forum pages on the internet, have solved several of the Problems of the Week, and have subscribed to a listserv. Our course has looked at geometry from multiple prespectives -- synthetic, coordinate, and transformational -- using manipulatives, software, and a lot of paper. We have also observed the links between geometry and algebra and number theory. In September the entire class demonstrated about 15 different pieces of software at the Buffalo Area Math Educators Conference.
We are looking forward to seeing the many creative solutions to the current elementary problem of the week. It will be our Thanksgiving project to evaluate these solutions and respond to participants. There may be a bit of a delay since all schools are closed from 11/27-12/1, which means that most of these grad students won't have access to email and the internet until 12/3, so be patient -- we will respond!
