Where's the Math?

Step One
Tear off the Tools and Colors menu. Select your favorite color from
the menu. Use the solid rectangle tool to draw a square. (Remember,
if you hold down the shift key as you draw a rectangle, you will make a
square.)
Step Two
Using the lasso, start at the upper lefthand corner of the square. Holding
the mouse button down, move the mouse towards the bottom of the square,
wiggling the mouse around as you go. Exit the lower lefthand corner of the
square. A section of the square will be selected. Slide the chunk away from
the rest of the square. Using the paint bucket tool, dump another
color into the separated chunk.
Step Three
Using the square selector tool, select the chunk. Go to
Effects under the Edit menu and select Scale and
Rotate. Rotate the chunk 90 degrees counterclockwise. Slide it into
position so that it connects with the rest of the square.
Step Four
Use the lasso tool to select another chunk, slide it away from the main
figure, rotate it 90 degrees, change its color and slide it into place
along the upper edge of the square.
Step Five
Now you have your main figure. Look at the figure. What does it look like
to you? Select a contrasting color and use the pencil or paintbrush to
decorate the figure. Do not add anything to the outer edges of the
silhouette. These two samples do not have any added decoration. Instead,
color was used to make the figures interesting.
Step Six
Use the lasso to select the figure and, holding the option key down, slide
a copy of the figure to the right or left away from the original object.
Rotate the entire figure and change the colors.
Step Seven
Use the lasso to select the figure and, holding the option key down, slide
a copy of the figure to the right or left away from the original object.
Again rotate the entire figure and change the colors.
Step Eight
Use the lasso to select the figure and, holding the option key down, slide
a copy of the figure to the right or left away from the original object.
Again rotate the entire figure and change the colors. There should be 4 of
each figure which can now be used to fit together into a tessellation.
Step Nine
Create a new card; then return to the card containing the four figures. Use
the lasso to select one of the shapes, then select Copy from the
Edit menu. Move to the new card and select Paste from the
Edit menu. Move the figure to the desired location.
Return to the card containing the four figures and, using the lasso tool,
select the second object. Select Copy from the Edit menu.
Move to the next card and select Paste from the Edit menu.
Move the figure to the desired location.
Continue moving from one card to the other, copying, rotating, and pasting
the shapes until you have created a tessellation. Be sure to completely
fill the card.
