Either you have the right answer or wrong answer. Your example of grocery store is rounding. It is much easier to round up when over .50 and round down when under .50. When I was in school, if I said to the teacher that the answer was a guess, the punishment would have been detention, note home, in some cases a slap in the head. (they were allowed that then).
