Just one additional post about this... Mason's explanation of Enigma
is very good, but for those who wish to see about the next best thing
to having a working enigma machine in your hands, you can see a very
good illustration and simulation of how the machine worked on "The
Code Book on CD Rom by Simon Singh... It costs under $10 US and has a
load of historical and illustrative material on coding.  You can learn
