Very simple 
lets start with the probem 

ask the child is the upper digit is bigger then the lower digit,, he
simply subtract in the normal way

if the upper digit is smaller than the lower digit,, as him to   make
upper digit in ten's form by prefixing 1 to the upper digit ....
